A woman's place is on top annapurna5/9/2023 The leader of the expedition was a woman named Arlene Blum, an established mountaineer and professional who had experienced her own forms of sexism both in the outdoor world, and as a woman in the science field. A thin plume of snow rose against the blue sky. The base camp manager, from a tent camp on a glacier far below, surrounded by alien peaks of the highest mountain range in the world watched through binoculars as the small figures moved across the still summit. I can imagine, on that still day, that the sun was blinding, the altitude breaking, and storms were in the air. The expedition was made up of twelve women, plus high altitude support, Sherpas and a film crew. They were not only the first Americans, but the first all women’s team to do so. On October 15, 1978, the four climbers representing the American Women’s Himalayan Expedition reached the summit of Annapurna, high in the Himalayan mountains.
